The Creation of Huahine (I)

From Raiatai, that frightful Hiro took to the sea

Upon his great canoe with sails spread wide.

He and his brothers caught To’erau with too much ease

Which alighted that sharp boat straight towards me.

During the dark night the ocean grew hazy,

And Hiro fell into the deep sleep of tired gods.

Tupurairai steered their poti with all his care.

But the other brothers were just too crazy.

Willful heathens bent on defiance of duty,

Threatened to feed Tupurairai to the sharks.

Thus, the canoe approached with full speed

And split me with their reckless cruelty.

Today I suffer as one, now cut to two,

Left to recall, reflect, and relive their snafu.
